Run, run, as fast as you can!

This week, we had lots of fun with the Gingerbread man!  We read stories online here and here!  We also read Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett.  We made our own gingerbread houses with gingerbread babies inside.  We also made a huge hallway display of our gingerbread man glyphs.  You can read the glyphs using the key posted by our gingerbread house.  Come check it out soon!

Marvelous Mice!

This past week Room 115 was busy learning about the letter M.  We also began our holiday study by singing Holiday Alphabet by Dr. Jean, Santa by Dr. Jean (where we learn to spell his name!), and Jingle Bells.  We also read Mimi’s Christmas, Santa Mouse and the Ratdeer, and several Laura Numeroff books including If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake, and If You Give a Dog a Donut.  You can watch If You Give a Mouse a Cookie read by Laura herself at the Barnes and Noble website here!

In our class, we have been working VERY hard at learning all the letter sounds!  We have also started sounding out short words.  After winter break, we will begin learning sight words, too!  We are getting ready to read.

This month, we are learning about AABB patterns.  You can practice this at home with small toys or even snacks.  Discuss reading the pattern by color/shape and then by letter.  You can discuss how the letter A is always the same shape/color and the letter B will always be the same shape/color.  There are some great games online to practice, including one at PBS Kids.

For the next week, we will be focusing on the letter C, candy canes, cookies, and The Gingerbread Man (and the many different books with similar stories/characters!)

We are looking for donations of red pom poms (craft supplies), candy canes (for the morning class only), gingerbread cookies, and icing.

Also, please note that if you have a fun activity/craft you would like to come in to play/do with the children on December 23rd, we will be having a small party.  Please let me know what you would like to do and I can send out a request to obtain the supplies.  If we do not have volunteers or supplies, then we will complete my planned activities.  Smile

Great Free Resource!

School Sparks offers some great printables for practice at home.  We will use some of the concepts and practice sheets at times within our classroom, but they offer so much more than we can squeeze into our short days!  They have a free downloadable book that provides ways to work with your child at home and includes many great practice sheets.  Check it out by clicking the image below!

Our Vegetable-Filled Week!

This was a busy week in room 115!  We enjoyed visits from two parents in the morning class, a visit from our afternoon volunteer, Mrs. S., and even a visit from our afternoon PTA mom, Mrs. Voegele!  We focused on the letter V this week which included lots of activities on vegetables!

We met Miss V and read her book.

We also met Mr. V with his violet vest.  You can see a bit of his silly video on youtube:

The children finished creating their handprint turkeys and we discussed other foods we could eat instead of turkey after reading many silly turkey and Thanksgiving books!  We also worked on AAB patterns (turkey, turkey, dinner) and numbers 0-5.

Please remember to send the fruit or vegetable you signed up for to our Eating the Rainbow day.  We will also be enjoying some student-made pumpkin pie, so children will not need a snack, but may want to bring a drink!  There will be no newsletter next week with the very short week.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Excellent Energy!

This week, we focused on the letter E.

We met Ms. E and learned about what everyone needs to live in her book on the computer.

We also read Elmer by David McKee.  We colored our own Elmer pictures and also used Microsoft Paint to create elmer on the computer.  You can practice this at home by going here!

We discussed many ways we can exercise and stay healthy.  On Thursday, we discussed how germs can make us sick.  We saw how Mrs. Barber’s fake sneeze germs spread quickly.  (The germs were actually glitter!)  When we high fived our friends, the germs flew everywhere!  They went on other hands, on clothes, and even on toys and the carpet – ick!  We learned about the best way to wash our hands and sneeze/cough (into our elbow or a tissue) in Germs are not for Sharing.

Popcorn and PJ’s!

We had a fun week learning about the letter P!  We met Ms. P and colored a pointy patch to match hers.  We also read so many great books about pumpkins and Halloween!  We practiced sorting books by fiction and non-fiction, too.  On Friday, we had a great time wearing our pajamas to school, playing pass the pumpkin, eating popcorn, reading Pinkalicious and Pajama Time! and going to the PTA Reading Program Kick-Off!  We also painted the letter P, practiced following directions, and learned a new roll-a-die game.  Last, we made a penguin for the letter P.

Next week we will be reviewing the letters we’ve learned so far and having fun at our harvest party on Wednesday.  Thank you to everyone who has offered items for our party and their time to help us.  I look forward to the party!

Check out photos at our shutterfly site and please remember to add your photos (from the Halloween party or other school activities) to our site!

Fabulous Friday!

What a busy, fun week we’ve had here in K4!

On Monday, students enjoyed an extra day at home while teachers were hard at work!  Tuesday and Wednesday, we started working hard on learning the letter F and its fabulous sound!  We also read Ms. F’s book about her funny feet and discussed what our funny feet can do.  We are continuing to learn about how to be a good friend.  On Thursday, the morning class enjoyed a visit from the West Allis Fire Department.  We learned about smoke detectors, items that are hot, and we even saw a firefighter put his suit on.  They showed us how they sound and look in their full suit so we won’t be afraid if they ever need to come to rescue us.  We read Even Firefighters HUG Their Moms.  One of the firefighters answered our question and we determined that YES, even firefighters still hug their moms!

As a center activity, some students made fire trucks out of paper.  Others painted houses on fire and we discussed that if a house is on fire you should get out and stay out!

Our class also enjoyed Fire Truck sung by Ivan Ulz many times this week.  You can watch it with your child here!

Nature, Nests, and Mr. N!

We had a busy week in room 115!  We learned about the letter N and met Mr. N.  We sang his song many times and noticed many words with the letter N in them!
Monday and Tuesday included practice with the new letter, as well as meeting Mr. N!
Wednesday, we got outside to enjoy the last of the warm late-Summer weather!
IMG_20110920_101738
Thursday, we were busy learning about shapes and creating our own mice out of shapes!
Friday, Mrs. Zieger read Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert to the morning classes and we all went outside on a leaf hunt for great leaves to use for our own leaf men!  It was a great way to spend the first day of fall!  Check out the photos on the shutterfly share site here.  We also celebrated a special friend’s birthday in our morning class.  Happy birthday, Alexander!  The afternoon class also went on a leaf hunt and created their own leaf men.  We also enjoyed the school-wide celebration assembly.
Finally, there was a mix up with the AM/PM folders today.  Some students may have received the wrong list of friend’s names – I am so sorry!  I will re-send them next week once they are straightened out.  (Things got goofy when they were printed and cut and I thought I went back to fix all of them, but missed some!)
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Our Wonderful Week!

Our first full (five day) week flew by!  On Monday and Tuesday, we read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and enjoyed the song and short video.  We made a delicious coconut tree snack with graham cracker “trunks,” granny smith apple “leaves,” and raisin “coconuts.”
IMG_20110913_091751IMG_20110913_091756IMG_20110913_091803IMG_20110913_091807IMG_20110913_133642IMG_20110913_133648
On Friday, the morning classes had a great time playing red light, green light in the gym with Mrs. Zieger’s class.  We practiced running, walking, and even crawling during this game!  On Friday afternoon, the PM class had gym in our classroom.  We moved to a new song – A Walking We Will Go from Greg and Steve.  It was lots of fun walking, stomping, skipping, hopping, sliding, and even tip-toeing!  At the end of the day, we got to go to the special celebration assembly where we sang Happy Birthday to the birthday kiddos, watched awards being given out, and even received a SPECIAL treat (chex mix and juice boxes!)  At the end, we had an all-school karaoke to a few songs.
This week, we also started a new behavior chart in our classroom.  Students will start the day on blue (Being safe, respectful, and responsible.)  They can move up to purple if they are really going above and beyond (helping others without being asked, etc.)  If they make bad choices, they can move down to orange (Uh, oh! Make better choices!), yellow (think about it.) or red (call/contact home.)  We have used this for two days and have already seen an improvement in some behaviors.  If the students end the day on purple, they receive a sparkly sticker on their clothespin.  When they receive 5 sparkles, their pin will be moved to a special board showcasing their amazing behavior.
  IMG_20110913_204944

Next week, we will be working on recognizing and writing our names, singing the alphabet, and we will even meet our first Letter People letter – Mr. N!

Teaching (and learning!) Self-Control

My husband shared an interesting article with me this evening about how children acquire new knowledge.  He was intending it for me to read and relate to our 11-month-old daughter, but the following excerpt relates well to the four- and five-year-olds!

quotation marks

Teaching Self-Control

Aamodt and Wang also emphasize the importance of teaching your children self-control from an early age.

"This is really critical because there are so many things parents want to do when they read parenting books," he says. "They take steps to teach their children math or reading ... but a big thing we can do for our children is to do the best to foster the development of self-control and willpower. Self-control and the ability to restrain impulses is associated with success at every age, whether it means being able to read at age 4, or being able to restrain impulses at a later age, or even what your peers think of you in high school. At all of these ages, willpower and self-control is a stronger predictor of academic success than IQ."

When children are young, they can learn self-control by focusing on any fun activity — whether that means studying martial arts or playing with dolls and planning a make-believe tea party.

"It gives the child practice at planning and organizing a series of topics to achieve a desired goal," says Aamodt. "When you're planning a tea party, you can't be acting like a fighter pilot. You have to be acting like a lady having a tea party. So pretending is one of the earliest types of exposure most kids get to planning and organizing their actions. And the more you practice that, the better you're going to be at it."

Making sure your child has fun while learning self-control is vitally important. Aamodt and Wang recommend, for instance, telling your child to pretend he or she is protecting a castle instead of just saying, "Stand still."

"Taking advantage of a child's natural sense of fun is a terrific way to instill these things," says Wang. "This is not the kind of thing that works well if it's forced. It can be something as easy as pretending to guard the castle or playing a take-turns game where you say, 'I'm going to draw an ear on this piece of paper, and when you see an ear, then it's your time to listen. And if you see a mouth on this other piece of paper, then it's your time to talk.' So all of these things can be done in very simple ways — in ways that are often fun — and the more fun it is, the more likely the child is to pay attention for a longer period of time. These things are fun, they don't cost money, and anybody can do it." quotation marks

Our busy week!

We were a busy bunch in Room 115 this week.  We practiced using new math and literacy toys (manipulatives.)  We also had our first gym class and went to the school playground for the first time.  On Friday, the afternoon class was able to be a part of the school-wide PBIS celebration.  Mrs. Barber won $25 to spend on the classroom in a staff drawing, too!  (This will be useful for some new play dough toys!)
We give a great, big

to everyone who has generously donated items to our classroom!
Here are a few photos from the week:

We are still working on sitting quietly when others are talking, as well as walking quietly when in the hall.  We will be starting more academic work next week with a focus on the letters in our names, Chicka Chicka Boom, Boom, and the difference between letters and numbers.
Enjoy the weekend!
